Unrequited
In 2022, I worked on a large scale painting which I titled “Unrequited”. The piece was inspired by pre-Raphaelite art and the poetry of Emily Dickinson. The painting was made as a narrative piece exploring feelings of unrequited love through the use of multiple figures and large areas of textured flowers.
“Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.”
-Emily Dickinson
This painting was my first experience working at this scale and the piece was completed over the course of four months. My practice developed massively over the course of this project as I explored new techniques and ways of working for a larger scale. Upon completion of this project I received the award of Creative and Enterprise Student of the Year at the college where I completed my studies in Fine Art.
“Last night I dreamt of cuckoos—
Who fiendishly work their way into strangers’ nests—
Masquerading as their young—
And climb their way into their hearts—
Scaling their ivory ribs rung by rung.”
